Disordered
Eating

NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association) is an organization dedicated to helping individual's struggling with eating disorders. They have created a short screening tool on their website; accessible by the 'Let's Try It' button below.

The chance for recovery increases the earlier an unhealthy relationship with food is detected. If you find yourself struggling with disordered eating or body image this module is merely a starting point to begin working on yourself and discovering that life does not have to be ruled by what is on your plate.

6 Types of Disordered Eating

Anorexia

  • weight loss (or lack of appropriate weight gain in growing children)

  • difficulties maintaining an appropriate body weight for height, age, and stature

  • distorted body image

Bulimia

Typically, a cycle of binge eating and compensatory behaviors such as self-induced vomiting designed to undo or compensate for the effects of binge eating

Binge Eating

  • recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food

  • a feeling of a loss of control during the binge

  • experiencing shame, distress or guilt afterwards

  • not regularly using unhealthy compensatory measures to counter the binge eating

Orthorexia

Typically, an obsession with proper or ‘healthful’ eating.

Laxative Abuse

 Typically, involves the repeated and frequent use of laxatives to eliminate unwanted calories, lose weight, “feel thin,” or “feel empty.”

Compulsive Exercise

Typically, is extreme, excessive exercise that significantly interferes with areas of one’s life.
